Sacramento Museums Take to the Streets With Special Activities & Events in August | Arts & Culture
In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and destinations that offer visitors the chance to explore California’s fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year. In August, many of the 30 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are taking to the streets with special events and activities, a few of which follows:
“Car Cruise” Presented by the California Automobile Museum -- August 3
Get your engines ready...the California Automobile Museum’s much anticipated “Car Cruise” is an annual event designed for vintage car owners to show off their hot rides. The eye-catching “Car Cruise” begins at Sacramento State and ends at Fulton and El Camino with a huge -- and FREE -- vintage car show beginning at 5 p.m. Spectators will enjoy live music, food trucks, vendor booths, and a beer garden. For more, visit www.calautomuseum.org or call 916-442-6802.
“Wheels Day” at the Sacramento Children’s Museum -- August 24
Vroom, vroom! The Sacramento Children’s Museum is setting up its very own race track in the back yard of the Museum for one special day in August! Kids of all ages are encouraged to bring their own bikes, trikes or scooters and play outside during “Wheels Day” at the Museum. In addition, the Museum will provide a few wheels to borrow, too. Participants are asked to bring helmets and can expect to learn about important safety tips as they cruise along the track. For more, visit www.sackids.org or call 916-638-7225.
“8th Annual BBQ on the Ramp” at the Aerospace Museum -- August 24
The community is invited to the 8th Annual “BBQ on the Ramp” fundraiser at the Aerospace Museum of California! Following an evening of wine tasting and BBQ cooked on-site, the giant hangar door will open and guests will proceed outside to the air park where more than 30 vintage military and civilian aircraft will be on display. Directly behind these aircraft, a professional fireworks show set to music from the 40's -- and with a patriotic flare -- will illuminate the aircraft and light up the night sky. For more, visit www.aerospaceca.org or call 916-643-3192.
Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento -- August 30 thru September 2
Nearly 200 tons of dirt will transform the streets of Old Sacramento’s historic district into a scene straight out of the 1850s for Gold Rush Days 2013! The wildly fun and FREE event features talented musicians performing live on several stages, Old West theatrics, history re-enactments, horse-drawn carriages, cowboys on horseback, ladies riding sidesaddle, wagon rides, gold panning, Artisan Alley, hands-on children’s arts and crafts activities, watermelon eating contests in the Save Mart BBQ area, fence painting at the Old Schoolhouse Museum and the always-popular Tent City activities.
