AUBURN, CA - A Roseville mother, who was arrested in connection with the death of her toddler, was granted bail of $500,000 from a Placer County judge on Thursday.

Denise Wilder, 37, was charged with child abuse and neglect after an autopsy showed her 2-year-old daughter, McKinley, died from malnutrition and alcohol poisoning.

McKinley's body was found inside Wilder's parents' home on Diamond Oaks Road in Roseville on April 4. Denise Wilder and Wilder's children had been staying at the home while her parents were out of the country.

According to the Placer County District Attorney's Office, Denise Wilder was the only adult present with her children when emergency responders arrived and found the toddler dead.

Test results showed Denise Wilder was intoxicated that day with a blood alcohol level of 0.2.

"She showed zero remorse, no concern for her living daughter and refused the only comfort item the child asked to have. Each night, she would cry that she wanted her teddy bear, Rupert," said the toddler's father, Mark Wilder, during the bail hearing on Thursday.

Mark Wilder told the court he was concerned for the welfare of Wilder's 5-year-old daughter, telling the court she woke up screaming in the middle of the night, worried her mother would try to hurt her.

"The child suffers horribly," he said. "Lately she has expressed that she wishes to die and be with McKinley."

It was also released in court on Thursday that on June 4, Wilder was admitted to the hospital with a blood alcohol level of 0.32 and tested positive for cocaine.

"There are a lot of unanswered questions regarding that death," said Denise Wilder's attorney, Jess Bedore.

Wilder's next court date is August 10 at 8:30 a.m. Hon. John Cosgrove says she must also undergo substance abuse treament as condition of bail.
