LINCOLN, Calif. - School administrators with Horizon Charter Schools announced Tuesday they intend to close the doors to their Lincoln K-2 grade school at the Life Christian Center on Dec. 21.
"It's amazing. We love it. That's why we are so disappointed," parent Sarah Henningsen said.
Henningnsen said her first grade son Asher is reading at a fourth grade level and wants answers to why the school is closing.
School leaders released the following statement:
Horizon Charter Schools, the fifteenth Charter School program in the State of California, encompasses academic and personalized educational services through a variety of State standards-based programs and curricular options within six counties. One of our small but valued options has been the Accelerated Learning Academy, or ALA
The Horizon Administration has tried to sustain a commitment to this program while changing its service delivery model, watching enrollment trends and receiving feedback from the parent community and teachers. After recent ALA community messages were delivered to the Administration and/or publicly posted, it became clear that the program in its current form is largely unwelcome to the community upon whose support the program itself depends.
Horizon's Administration has therefore reviewed all options and decided to discontinue the ALA program K-8, including all ALA classes, effective the end of this semester, December 21, 2012. Parents that elect to keep their children with Horizon Charter Schools will still have available the Core Knowledge curriculum that is in use within the ALA program. Parents will also have available other program options within Horizon as a whole. Horizon Charter Schools remains open and fully committed to the successful education of all students, combining academic excellence with personalized learning.
In October, Horizon closed their Rocklin charter school giving parents three days notice.
Parents whose students attend classes in Lincoln said they hope to learn the real reason the school is closing soon.
