Join Safe Kids Celebration May 18

Join Safe Kids Celebration May 18

Safe Kids Placer County is celebrating Safe Kids Day on Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., at Bill McAnnally Racing, NAPA AutoCare Center, 900 Riverside Ave., in Roseville.  Join the celebration and tour the race car shop and transporter, get a child car seat inspection, learn about bike helmet safety, or get a complimentary vehicle safety inspection.

When a child dies or is seriously injured the lives of the families and entire communities are changed forever.  In the United States, injuries are the number one killer of kids. Millions more suffer injuries that can affect them for a lifetime.

The celebration will raise awareness about the ways to protect children from preventable injuries and to raise funds to support local and national injury prevention programs.

For more information contact Safe Kids Placer County at 916-772-6300.

Occupational Therapist Helps Patients Live Life to Fullest

The field of occupational therapy had never occurred to Roseville resident Brandy Cosgrove, occupational therapist (OT) at Sutter Rehabilitation Institute. Instead, she pursued studies to become a physical therapist.  She became interested in this line of work as a teenager in high school after a friend’s father had accidentally fallen off a roof and became paralyzed.  Cosgrove saw first-hand how the therapists interacted with the father and the family.

During her studies she job shadowed an OT and fell in love with this profession. She quickly changed from physical therapy to occupational therapy in order to work with patients who had been injured or had suffered a debilitating illness.

Are You at Risk for Osteoarthritis?

Are You at Risk for Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, creates joint pain and reduced motion.  “Osteoarthritis symptoms usually develop slowly and worsen over time,” says Paul Sasaura, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with Sutter Independent Physicians.  Signs that you may be experiencing osteoarthritis include:

  • Pain in the joint during or after movement
  • Joint tenderness when light pressure is applied
  • Joint stiffness upon awakening or after being inactive for a period of time
  • Loss of flexibility due to decreased range of motion
  • A grating sensation when moving the joint

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones deteriorates over time.  Dr. Sasaura says when the cartilage wears away, the bones under the cartilage begin to rub together causing pain, swelling and loss of motion.
