Drexel University hosting – Sacramento Brand Drawing Board on May 21

A strong brand narrative can have a huge impact on a city’s culture and prosperity.

That brand can influence someone’s decision to visit, go shopping and dining, support a beloved sports team, or even decide to make that city their home.

Five of the Sacramento region’s top marketing experts will be at Drexel University Sacramento on Tuesday, May 21 (6-7:30 p.m.) to discuss various ways that Sacramento’s brand will need to be rebuilt for the city to continue thriving.

The free event is open to the public.

THERE IS NO FORMULA FOR SUCCESS: 3 TIPS FOR STARTING UP

THERE IS NO FORMULA FOR SUCCESS: 3 TIPS FOR STARTING UP

I’m drawn to the fact that entrepreneurship isn’t defined. Each person is free to make it into the job title, industry or revenue structure that they define as success. But this freedom also makes it easy to get swallowed up by ideas and opportunities without accomplishing much.

I spend my time working on entrepreneurial ventures in the marketing industry because I’m passionate about the field and want to see things actually happen. And that takes hard work, an open mind,  and some good advice from several people — because making an idea into a reality isn’t formulaic.

Based on my experience, here are a few bits of perspective I can offer you:... Read More

Calif. to propose new student achievement testing

Calif. to propose new student achievement testing

LOS ANGELES (AP) - California's top education official is expected to unveil a new system of student achievement testing on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson was tasked by the state Legislature last year to revamp the state's bank of standardized tests that measure student progress in English language arts and math and qualify high school students for graduation.

The proposed new testing comes as the state starts phasing in new national curriculum standards known as Common Core State Standards. The emphasis of the new testing will be on critical thinking and problem solving skills that will be aligned with Common Core's focus.

The proposal is the result of six months of meetings by a statewide taskforce that has held meetings around California gathering input from educators.

We All Need to Know We Matter

We All Need to Know We Matter

Take teenagers who receive no expressions of love or healthy modeling from home: it doesn’t take long for that deficit to show up in academics, motivation, and demeanor. In acts of desperation, they join gangs or get pregnant or drop out of school. It’s a tragic cycle that has become all too common, with one unhappy ending after another.

During the past year, I’ve had many opportunities to speak with teens and young adults who are, in one form or another, facing a crisis of relevance. They see school as irrelevant, and worse yet, themselves as irrelevant.

Some of their questions:... Read More
