Crimsanna and Brigitte. An inspiring moment back in 1988! Brigitte was 3 and she was reading/comforting her dog Crimsanna, who was dying of Cancer. Crimsanna passed away about a month later. Brigitte grew up to be an avid reader and is currently enrolled in College and has plans to become a veterinarian.

This is my doggy Eldon whos a handsome red dachshund with Tatiana-Maryssa reading to him. Hes full of life and never slows,, except to be read too.

This is Devin, reading to Jake. Devin was around a year old and Jake was his best friend. He was a rescue who tolerated all kinds of "love" from Devin and he lived a very happy and loved life until we lost him to lymphoma in 2007.

My son Daniel Mayorga was born premature and his first 2 years of life were touch and go, and challenging. Now he is 7 years old a special ed student and with his learning disability and shyness he has struggled to read. Now he has learned sight words and this month has learned to read more comfortably with reading with our dog Daisy Dukes by his side along with those he feels comfortable with. I am so proud of his achievements.

This is Serena. She is 3 years old and loves to read. Although she does not know the words she interjects her story. Both of these are older and completely organic. The boxer is Syris, he is no longer with us. The American Bulldog is Odin and he is now a bit bigger by a few months.

Studies have shown that reading to dogs (pets) can help children improve their reading skills.  By providing a safe, comfortable setting, kids can overcome the feeling of embarrassment, which is one of the obstacles to learing how to read.   

News10's Reading Connects campaign is all about helping kids become literate.

With that in mind, My Neighborhood has launched this contest.

How do you participate?

Just send us a photo or video of your children reading to a pet.  We'll post it in this photo gallery, or if it's a video, we'll post it as an article.  Then, we'll add your name to our random drawing to win a dog-friendly gift.

Send your photo or video to writer@news10.net . The sweepstakes contest runs until May 31.
